For most, a bright, healthy smile is a powerful source of confidence. When your teeth are lackluster, you may not feel good. Luckily, teeth whitening treatments are quick fixes to whip your smile and your confidence into shape.

While teeth whitening procedures and treatments are commonplace, there are some preparations to be made to maximize your results. Whether you are having your teeth whitened in-office or at home, there are a few things you should know and do to prepare your teeth.

Opt for a pre-treatment teeth cleaning

Whichever treatment we advise, be sure to have your teeth cleaned to greatly improve the results of your whitening treatment. When plaque or tartar is present on your teeth, the whitening products used cannot penetrate the enamel properly and therefore do not have maximum effect.

It is also a good idea to maintain a good dental care routine in the weeks prior to treatment. Brush and floss daily to avoid problems that can delay or spoil your teeth whitening procedure.

Desensitize sensitive teeth

A fairly common side effect of teeth whitening procedures is sensitive gums and teeth. If you are prone to sensitivity outside of dental treatments, you will want to invest in a desensitizing toothpaste before your teeth whitening procedure.

You can use the toothpaste for at least two weeks before your scheduled procedure. A desensitizing toothpaste contains strontium chloride and potassium nitrate, ingredients that help block the transmission of pain signals from the tooth to the nerve.

Some people experience sensitivity because heat and chemicals used during dental treatments penetrate tooth enamel. Incorporating a desensitizing toothpaste into your dental care routine can help reduce any discomfort before and after whitening treatment.

If you think your teeth are extremely sensitive and you are going to feel discomfort after treatment, don’t hesitate to tell your dentist.

Use a shade guide

When it comes to teeth whitening, improvising is not a good idea.
Make a visit with your hygienist beforehand to find out if your stains will lighten as much as you expect them to, evaluate if they are actually stains and if the whitening will be the shade you expect.

Your hygienist can help you determine how much lighter it needs to be to achieve a natural, bright smile.
Since some stains cannot be removed or treated with whitening, you’ll want to get an expert opinion before moving forward.

Schedule a dental checkup

If you have a routine dental visit scheduled just before your whitening session, take advantage of the appointment. Even if it’s not scheduled, seeing your dentist before whitening is working together for successful treatment. Your dentist will consider your dental health and your particular needs before recommending one whitening treatment or another.

Your hygienist will be able to determine if you are an ideal candidate. Even professional whitening gel cannot remove internal stains caused by trauma, decay or prolonged exposure to antibiotics. Whitening treatments are only suitable for external stains caused by food, drink and even smoking. We will inform you about all this in depth at your next visit.
