At Clínica Miravéco, we understand the concern generated by bad breath, also known as halitosis. This term encompasses a series of unpleasant odors emanating from the mouth, but its origin can vary. It is important to demystify and understand the different forms of halitosis in order to effectively address this problem.

Types of Halitosis

Halitosis is not a single phenomenon. It is mainly classified into three types:

Genuine Halitosis.

This type is characterized by the real and measurable presence of bad odor in the mouth. It is an objective and tangible problem, detectable by means of specific tests.

It can be subdivided into three categories according to its origin:

Physiological Halitosis

It comes from the back of the tongue, where bacteria and debris accumulate and produce volatile sulfur compounds responsible for the bad odor.

Oral Halitosis

This type is related to periodontal diseases or tongue problems. Conditions such as gingivitis or periodontitis may be the main causes of bad odor.

Extraoral Halitosis

Less common, it is associated with problems in other parts of the body, such as ENT infections or systemic disorders. This type requires further evaluation to identify its origin.
