Because children’s oral health begins long before the first cavity
If you have children, you’ve probably heard a thousand times that you need to take care of their teeth from a young age. But… where do you actually start? Should you use fluoride toothpaste? And what if they don’t want to brush?
Don’t worry. In this article, we’ll answer those questions (and a few more), without jargon, and with practical tips we use every day at Clínica MiravéCo.
Oral hygiene starts before the first tooth
It may sound strange, but yes — hygiene starts even before the teeth come in. Cleaning your baby’s gums with a damp gauze after each feeding helps eliminate bacteria and gets them used to the sensation.
And when that first little tooth appears (usually between 6 and 12 months), you can already use a small, soft toothbrush with a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste — about the size of a grain of rice. A deep clean isn’t needed… just build the habit.
Brushing: better with routine, no battles
Between ages 2 and 6, kids have most of their baby teeth. Here it’s key to establish a routine: brushing twice a day, especially before bed, using a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
And don’t worry if they don’t do it perfectly at first. What matters is that you guide them. In fact, it’s recommended that parents supervise brushing until age 7 or 8. You can let them go “first” and then finish up for them.
What if they resist? Try turning it into a game: play music, sing a two-minute song, or use apps that turn brushing into an adventure.
Less sugar, fewer cavities
It’s not all about brushing. Diet plays a crucial role too. We know it’s hard to eliminate sweets completely… but you can reduce how often they’re eaten, avoid sticky candies, and offer water instead of packaged juices.
Fresh fruits, dairy, nuts (when there’s no choking risk)… All of that helps strengthen teeth and keep gums healthy.
Dental visits without fear
The first dental check-up should happen around the child’s first birthday. And no, you don’t need to wait for a “problem” to arise. Quite the opposite: if the first visit is calm, painless, and not urgent, your child will associate the dental office with a positive experience.
At Clínica MiravéCo, we’re very clear on this: we take care of the experience, use kid-friendly language, and focus on prevention. Because a good first impression… lasts a lifetime!
A professional tip to every parent
The most important thing is: don’t stress. No child does it perfectly from day one. The key is repetition, guidance, and making dental care just part of their daily routine — like washing hands or putting on pajamas.
And if you need help, we’re here. Not just to “fix teeth,” but to support you in educating your child about health with kindness, clear information, and trust.
