Because a healthy smile is the best start for your baby

If you’re thinking about getting pregnant — or already are — you probably have a thousand things on your mind: diet, vitamins, medical appointments… But have you thought about your oral health? Taking care of your mouth during pregnancy is not only safe, it’s essential for both your well-being and your baby’s.

Hormonal changes and their impact on oral healt

During pregnancy, hormonal changes can increase the risk of dental problems such as pregnancy gingivitis, characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. This condition becomes more common due to rising hormone levels, which intensify the gums’ response to dental plaque.

The link between oral health and your baby’s development

Poor oral health during pregnancy has been associated with issues such as premature birth, low birth weight, and preeclampsia. Additionally, the bacteria that cause cavities can be transmitted to the baby, increasing their risk of developing cavities early in life.

Tips to maintain good oral health during pregnancy

  • Regular brushing: Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid irritating sensitive gums.
  • Flossing: Clean between your teeth once a day to prevent plaque build-up and reduce the risk of gingivitis.
  • Rinsing after nausea: If you experience vomiting, rinse your mouth with a solution of one teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in a cup of water to neutralize stomach acids and protect your tooth enamel.
  • Balanced diet: Limit sugar intake and choose foods rich in calcium and vitamins. Drink plenty of water, preferably fluoridated, to help maintain good oral health.

Dental visits during pregnancy

It’s safe — and recommended — to see your dentist during pregnancy. Let them know you’re pregnant so they can provide the best care. Routine dental procedures like cleanings and fillings are safe and can help prevent more serious problems.
